We retire to The Hotel Kalarash, an old, three-story building in the center of the shtetl, just a short carriage ride from our property. When at last weâre checked in, standing in our room, Ita turns to me, takes my hand in hers and says, âAlone with my husband. At last.â
I smile. At last. Sheâs correct. Iâm twenty-six years old! How long have I lamented the fact that marriage seemed like a doorway through which I had been barred entry? I squeeze her hand in return.
âMy wife.â
I carry her to our bedchamber and make a grand gesture of bearing her over the threshold. She feels nubile and supple in my arms as I lower her onto the bed.
âWell then, Ita.â
She looks up at me, her blue eyes alight. âYes, Elazar?â
âYou make me feel a bit shy,â I say.
She tugs on my shirt, pulling it over my head as I lift her dress. My mind swims in a heady whirl of wine and giddy feelingsânervousness, eagerness, even a bit of bashful modestyâbut I gasp when I see her bare skin for the first time.
âDo you find me attractive?â she asks.
I study her body, taking in the soft curves of her flesh, her supple arms, expansive chest, strong shoulders. Her skin fairly hums with desire, and so, I realize, does mine.
âI find you sublime,â I answer honestly, leaning forward to meet her lips with mine.
Ita offers me her body and proves any fears I might have had wrong with our first, long kiss as man and wife. Thereâs certainly no lack of passion between us. I take her in my arms with a strong, determined embrace, and lower myself ever closer until there is no more fabric or modesty to separate us. There is no more conversation this evening, at least not of the spoken kind.
